Decibyl vs Exotel — an honest comparison for Indian teams
We name what they do better. A comparison page that admits a weakness is believed; one that doesn’t, isn’t — and you can fact-check either of us in thirty seconds.
Exotel is best for
Exotel is one of India’s largest cloud telephony providers, and it is genuinely good at the thing it was built for: moving a call reliably between a phone number and an application, at carrier scale, with the regulatory paperwork already handled. It has deep operator relationships, a long enterprise track record, and call routing, IVR and contact-centre tooling that a young platform has not had the years to build. Worth being precise about the category: Exotel is telephony infrastructure with AI added on top, not a voice-native AI platform — and plenty of voice AI products, ours included, are perfectly happy to run on top of a carrier layer like theirs. This is a comparison of where the intelligence lives, not a claim that you must pick one.
Decibyl is best for
Decibyl is voice-native: the agent is the thing that handles the call end to end, rather than a bot bolted onto a routing layer. The practical difference is real-time streaming — an architecture built from the start around interrupting, barging in and code-switching mid-sentence behaves differently from an IVR stack with a model attached to it. Add published INR pricing, a GST invoice, and Hinglish and Tanglish as the default register.
Side by side
Where each of us actually stands today.
| Feature | Exotel | Decibyl |
|---|---|---|
| Published rate | Telephony plans published; no per-agent AI voice rate found on a public page as of Sep 2026 — from public secondary sources, not read on their own pricing page | See /pricing — published, not blended |
| Indian languages | Indian language support via the AI layer added on top of the telephony | 10+ live (7 Indian, code-mixed by default, plus French, Spanish, Arabic) — and any language your stack supports |
| Indian phone numbers (DIDs) | Yes — one of the strongest Indian number estates available | Indian DIDs, Indian SIP trunking included |
| INR billing + GST invoice | INR with GST invoicing | INR-first, GST-compliant invoice via Razorpay |
| Data residency | India | India, US, or EU — Mumbai (ap-south-1) by default |
| MCP-native agent building | No | Yes — build agents from Claude Code |
| Cost transparency | Bundled into plan and per-minute telephony rates; provider-key support is not published | Every component itemised on each call receipt, not blended into one rate |
| Managed onboarding | Sales-led for AI; telephony self-serve on published plans | Managed setup, typically half a day |
Where Exotel is stronger
Carrier-grade telephony, and years of it
Direct operator relationships, national coverage, and uptime on the underlying call path that a smaller platform simply has not had time to prove. If the call connecting is the risk you are managing, this is the mature answer.
Regulatory and enterprise track record
A long history of serving regulated Indian enterprises, with the TRAI-facing paperwork, DLT registration and procurement history that large buyers ask for.
Breadth of the telephony product
Number provisioning, call routing, IVR, call recording, campaign management and contact-centre features as one estate, well past what a voice agent platform covers.
They can be the layer underneath you
Running an AI agent on Exotel telephony is a normal, supported architecture. That makes them a partner as often as a rival, which is not true of most names on this page.
Where Decibyl is stronger
Voice-native, not AI-on-IVR
Built around real-time streaming from the start, so interruption, barge-in and mid-sentence code-switching are the normal case rather than the limit of what a routing layer can be made to do.
Published pricing you can read today
A rate on a page rather than a quote after a call. Exotel does not publish per-agent AI voice pricing — checked Sep 2026.
Code-mixed Indian speech as the default
Hinglish and Tanglish are the register the agent expects, not a language setting configured toward it.
MCP-native agent building
Build and change agents from Claude Code, with the model economics itemised rather than blended into a platform bill.
Verdict
Buying telephony — numbers, routing, carrier reliability, the compliance paperwork — Exotel is a stronger answer than we are, and we will not pretend otherwise. Buying an agent that actually completes the conversation in the language your customer speaks, at a price you can read before you talk to anyone, that is Decibyl. A good number of teams end up running the second on top of the first.
